Who We Are

The Learning Grove is a 3rd–8th grade microschool designed for families seeking a more personalized, student-centered approach to education.

Rooted in holistic practices and the principles of Atomic Habits, we focus on small, consistent actions that build strong learners, confident thinkers, and responsible community members.

Our Philosophy

At The Learning Grove, we believe every child is unique and learns in different ways, guided by Howard Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences. We provide personalized learning experiences that meet students where they are, helping them develop strong habits, curiosity, and confidence, inspired by James Clear’s philosophy of habit formation. Learning at The Learning Grove is relationship-centered, nurturing the whole child academically, socially, and emotionally. We encourage students to explore their interests, discover their strengths, and build a strong sense of purpose, while partnering closely with families to support growth at school and at home.

Meet the Founder

I’m Sheena Mahome-Jackson—educator, instructional coach, youth advocate, mother of five, and grandmother. For more than 30 years, I’ve served students and families as a teacher and literacy instructional coach for grades 3–8. My work has always centered on helping children grow academically while honoring who they are as individuals.

My understanding of how children learn began at home. I raised five children, each with different strengths and learning styles. Guided by Howard Gardner’s theory of Multiple Intelligences, I learned to recognize brilliance in many forms—not just academic. I was also blessed with a village that helped raise my children, shaping my belief that students thrive when families and schools work together in true partnership.

The moment I knew I had to open a different kind of school came after the pandemic. Students returned to classrooms with widely varying academic and emotional needs, yet teachers were expected to meet those needs in large, rigid settings. It was frustrating for educators, overwhelming for parents, and discouraging for students. It became clear that the traditional model was no longer enough.

I founded The Learning Grove to create what was missing: small learning communities, personalized instruction, strong relationships, and a deep commitment to wellness. This is a school designed to support the whole child and to partner meaningfully with families.

At The Learning Grove, I promise to do school differently.
Our model is built for how children actually learn—responsive, relational, and deeply human. I promise to be an ally to families, an advocate for students, and a leader who believes that when we nurture the whole child, success follows.
